What it is

Epitalon (also spelled epithalon) is a synthetic peptide of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine. It was designed by Russian gerontologist Vladimir Khavinson's group as a small, reproducible version of epithalamin, a peptide extract taken from animal pineal glands.

The pineal gland makes melatonin and sets the body's day-night rhythm. Khavinson's theory, developed over decades, is that short "bioregulator" peptides from specific organs can restore gene activity in the tissues they came from and slow ageing. Epitalon is the best-known product of that programme.

How it works

Two mechanisms are proposed, both from the same research group:

  • Telomerase activation. Telomeres are the protective caps on chromosome ends. They shorten each time a cell divides, and most adult cells do not make the telomerase enzyme that rebuilds them. In 2003 the group reported that adding epitalon to cultured human fetal fibroblasts, which normally lack telomerase, switched the enzyme on and lengthened telomeres.
  • Pineal and melatonin regulation. Studies in old monkeys and elderly people reported that pineal peptide preparations raised night-time melatonin and restored a more normal daily melatonin rhythm.

How a four amino acid peptide would reach the nucleus and switch on specific genes is not established.

What the research found

Evidence quality first

Nearly every published epitalon study, in cells, animals and people, comes from Khavinson's group or its collaborators, and much of it appeared in Russian-language journals. A review by the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation made exactly this point: the results have not been confirmed by other groups, and a proper phase 1 safety study has never been done. Treat everything below with that in mind.

Cell studies

  • Khavinson and colleagues (2003) reported telomerase expression and telomere elongation in human fibroblasts treated with epitalon.
  • Al-dulaimi and colleagues (2025), a lab at Brunel University London outside Khavinson's network, reported dose-dependent telomere lengthening in human cell lines. In normal fibroblasts and epithelial cells this came through telomerase. In two breast cancer cell lines it came through a different route called ALT (alternative lengthening of telomeres). This is the first outside replication of the telomere finding, but it is still cells in a dish.

Animal studies

  • Anisimov and colleagues (2003) gave female mice epitalon for five days every month from three months of age until death, 54 mice per group. Mean lifespan did not change. The lifespan of the longest-lived 10% rose by 13.3%, chromosome aberrations in bone marrow fell by 17.1%, and leukaemia was less common, while total tumour incidence was unchanged.
  • A 2002 paper from the same group reported slower ageing and fewer breast tumours in cancer-prone transgenic mice.

Human studies

  • Korkushko and colleagues (2007) reported that both epithalamin and epitalon raised night-time melatonin in elderly people with low pineal function. The abstract gives no participant numbers, doses or statistics.
  • Khavinson and Morozov (2003) followed 266 people over 60 for six to eight years after courses of thymalin, epithalamin or both, and reported lower mortality and fewer respiratory infections. This used the extract epithalamin, not synthetic epitalon, and the design falls well short of a modern randomised trial.

There is no published randomised, placebo-controlled trial of synthetic epitalon measuring telomeres, disease or survival in humans.

Side effects reported in studies

The group's human reports describe no side effects, and the mouse lifespan study found no change in food intake or body weight. Absence of reported harm in small, single-group studies is not the same as demonstrated safety. The theoretical concern with any telomerase activator is cancer, since most tumours rely on telomere maintenance to keep dividing. The 2025 finding that cancer cells lengthened telomeres through ALT after epitalon exposure is a reason for caution, not reassurance.

Status in the Philippines

No epitalon product is registered with FDA Philippines, so it cannot be sold as a medicine. It is not a controlled substance under RA 9165. It is available locally through research-chemical suppliers and has a following in Manila's longevity community, where the pineal and sleep angle draws interest from shift workers and people over 40. That interest is well ahead of the evidence.

Storage

Lyophilised epitalon powder is best kept refrigerated and away from light. Once reconstituted, keep it at 2 to 8°C. In a Philippine household, a brownout can push a fridge well above that range within hours, so keep vials in the main body of the fridge rather than the door, and do not rely on a cooler bag for long outages.
